Design and function of stabiliser bars (sway bars)

2024-05-20

A complete stabiliser bar kit contains many components such as stabiliser bar links and stabiliser bar bracket rubber. The stabiliser bar is usually usually attached to the wheel suspension or control arm by the stabiliser bar linkage. Because of the multi-directional movement of the ball or bushing structure on the stabiliser bar linkage, it allows the stabiliser bar to perform its role to the fullest.
When one wheel is deflected, the torque of the stabiliser bar causes the other wheel to be lifted as well, i.e. allowing the left and right wheels to go up and down in the same direction. This prevents the body from swaying excessively (side-to-side) when cornering. If both wheels are already up and down, the stabiliser bar will not be effective.
